What is ketosis? Is ketosis safe? What are its benefits? If you have questions and haven’t found an answer yet, don’t miss today’s article.
The ketogenic diet or Keto Diet is well defined because, when performed, our body goes into ketosis. But … what does ketosis mean? During the ketogenic diet followed in the PronoKal weight loss treatments, carbohydrates (the main source of energy for our body) are reduced and, unlike other unhealthy ketogenic diets, fat consumption is also reduced. In addition, they provide the right amount of protein that the body needs to perform its functions properly, without overloading it. This fact makes our body use stored fats as an energy source, so it can lose weight quickly at the expense of fat.
However, not all types of ketogenic diets or Keto diets are healthy, as many increase the intake of fats and / or proteins, without professional supervision, which poses a danger to our health. If you’re on a ketogenic diet, but don’t know if it’s healthy, check out these 5 tips.
Ketosis is safe.
A study carried out in 2017 at the Obesity Unit of the Hospital de Santiago de Compostela Complex and published in the prestigious scientific journal Endocrine showed that ketosis is a safe and beneficial mechanism for overweight or obese patients. The aim of this study was to compare the health status of people in ketosis induced by a ketogenic diet (according to the PronoKal methodology) with that of people in diabetic ketoacidosis, a complication of diabetes that is often confused with ketosis. Patients who followed the ketogenic diet to lose weight showed that they had blood pH (a parameter that marks blood acidity) and glycemia and bicarbonate levels in normal values, which did not occur in patients with ketoacidosis.
Ketosis is also beneficial
This and other scientific articles also show the benefits of the ketogenic diet in weight loss, through a protocol prescribed under medical control and with multidisciplinary support such as that followed in the PronoKal methods. Among its benefits are:
- Fat loss: when using fat as an energy source, ketosis offers high quality weight loss: more than 90% of the weight lost is fat mass, provided it is accompanied by an adequate dietary pattern and physical activity.
- Reduces hunger: Ketosis has been shown to reduce appetite in patients following a ketogenic diet.
- Vitality: during ketosis, a psychostimulant effect was observed, the origin of which probably comes from our prehistoric relatives to facilitate the search for food during periods of fasting.
- Improves insulin sensitivity : most studies indicate that ketogenic diets are a good example of diets with beneficial effects on the hydrate and lipid metabolism in the blood compared to other diets.
According to Dr. Diego Bellido (head of service of the Endocrinology Unit of the Complexo Hospitalar Universitário de Ferrol), “we hope that the publication of this research will help inform the population about ketosis and the benefits it brings to the patient”.
